"Calcoen" is about a woman changing and morphing into the next phase of her life.  It represents power, the ability to open and expand oneself and to be ready for new challenges and obstacles.  Calcoen also means successful, joyful, freedom lover.  This was a cooperative piece.  I made the background and as I was painting a friend drew a spiral on the canvas.  I wasn’t sure what to do with it and immediately I saw this woman figure appear from nothing.  Calcoen would not have emerged on my own.  It took this powerful move from my friend.  She changed the direction of the painting and improved the overall aesthetic of the piece.
